Professional profile

Damiano Comin is a veterinarian at IZSVe – SCS8 – Optimization and control of food production. He graduated in Veterinary Medicine in 1996 at Bologna University. In 2000 he was awarded a specialist diploma in Animal health, breeding and livestock production (Teramo University), in 2002 a Master in Biotechnology (Urbino University) and in 2004 a Master in Veterinary public health (Padova University).

From 1998 to 2000 he had a permanent position as a veterinarian at IZS of Abruzzo and Molise – Teramo, working at the Virology unit at Lanciano and Isernia laboratories. From 2000 to 2005 he moved to IZSVe – SCT2, laboratories of Belluno, Treviso and San Donà di Piave with a permanent position as veterinarian. From 2005 to 2013 he had a permanent position as veterinarian at  IZSVe, SC1 – Food microbiology. He has now a permanent position as veterinarian at  IZSVe, SCS8 – Optimization and control of food production.

He performs research activities in veterinary public health issues, especially food safety and in the following area: epidemiology and prevention of foodborne diseases; study of the dynamics of foodborne pathogens (especially Listeria monocytogenes) in ready-to-eat foods; experimental activities (challenge test, shelf-life test, durability test, etc.) to validate food products and production processes in food businesses. He is also involved in some more activities, such as the enhancement and promotion of typical foods, technical and scientific support to the food chain, proposal and implementation of simplified own-control models for small food businesses.

He is working as head of research unit at the following research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Health: RC IZSVe 17/12: Ethnic food and food safety: microbiological issues, adverse reactions, fraud and risk perception by the final consumer; RC IZSLER 12/12: Development and validation of mathematical models of predictive microbiology to scientifically document the hygienic and health safety of traditional Italian foods; RC IZSLER 33/2013: Towards Expò 2015: risk analysis and communication through the IIZZSS network.
