Professional profile
Alice Fusaro is a senior biologist at the SSDS1 – Technology and Innovation Platform Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
Following her Master’s degree in Biotechnology for Food Science (University of Padua, 2006), she earned a PhD in Veterinary Sciences from the University of Padua in 2014. Since 2006, her work has focused on viral genome sequencing and analysis, with a particular emphasis on emerging and zoonotic viruses. Recently, her work has centered on developing second- and third-generation sequencing methodologies to study the virome and host-pathogen interactions.
Her research aims to understand the spread dynamics and key inter- and intra-host evolutionary mechanisms of major viral pathogens, including avian influenza, Newcastle disease virus, and SARS-CoV-2. Additionally, she conducts molecular epidemiology studies, investigating the roles of mutations, natural selection, and recombination in shaping the diversity of emerging viruses. She is also at the forefront of monitoring SARS-CoV-2 variants in the Veneto Region.
She actively participates in numerous national and international research projects, collaborating with European and international bodies such as the FAO, EFSA, and ECDC. Since 2020, she has been a member of the EFSA Standing Working Group (SWG) on Avian Influenza. Furthermore, she delivers training to both internal and external personnel in phylogenetic analysis, molecular epidemiology, spatio-temporal genetic analysis, and the application of second- and third-generation sequencing technologies.
She has authored and co-authored 150 publications, including articles in peer-reviewed journals, national publications, and national and international conference proceedings.
