Professional profile
Marta Vascellari is a veterinary officer at the SCS4 – Diseases under Surveillance Plans and Specialist Diagnostics Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
She graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Padua (2000) and is registered with the Veterinary Medical Board of the Province of Treviso. She completed a postgraduate specialization in Breeding, Hygiene, Pathology of Aquatic Species, and Control of Derived Products at the University of Udine (2004) and earned a Ph.D. from the Doctoral School in Veterinary Sciences (Public Health specialization) at the University of Padua (2009).
At the IZSVe, she is responsible for cyto-histopathological diagnostic activities for diseases affecting domestic, wild, and laboratory animals. Since its launch in 2012, she has been in charge of setting up and managing the canine blood bank, coordinating donor selection, blood donations, health screening, and the distribution of canine and feline blood units. Since 2021, she has served as Head of the IZSVe’s Pets Specialist Centre.
Her research focuses primarily on executing epidemiological and pathogenesis studies in veterinary oncology and infectious diseases using immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and molecular biology techniques. Additionally, she manages the control programme for illegal treatments in beef cattle using histological evaluation of target tissues and the identification of indirect treatment bioindicators.
She is responsible for managing the Animal Tumor Registry for the provinces of Venice and Vicenza, active since 2005. Key collaborations include work with the the IZS of Piedmont, Liguria, and Aosta Valley on animal tumor registries and the assessment of illegal treatments in beef cattle, as well as joint research with the Veneto Institute of Oncology (IOV) and several Italian Universities in veterinary and comparative oncology.
