Professional profile
Denis Vio is a senior veterinary officer at the SCT4 – Udine and Pordenone Territorial Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
He graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Padua. Subsequently, he completed a postgraduate specialization in Breeding, Hygiene, Pathology of Aquatic Species, and Control of Derived Products at the University of Udine. Since 2006, he has served as a veterinary officer at the SCT4 – Friuli Venezia Giulia peripheral structure of the IZSVe. He is currently Head of the Swine Pathology, Breeding, and Welfare Laboratory at the Pordenone peripheral structure.
His work is primarily dedicated to swine pathology. His diagnostic activities focus on the isolation and identification of clinically relevant bacterial species, as well as the application of biomolecular methods to detect major viral and bacterial agents for diagnostic and epidemiological purposes. This laboratory diagnostic work is combined with on-site farm visits, particularly in swine herds. From 2008 to 2010, his focus was centered on issues related to Salmonella infections in both breeding and fattening farms. In recent years, he has expanded his research to include swine respiratory diseases—analyzing interactions between bacterial and viral agents—and testing the use of new diagnostic matrices, such as bronchoalveolar lavages and oral fluids.
He has served as principal investigator and research unit head for research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Health, covering both animal health and food safety topics.
