Antonia Ricci was appointed Director General of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe) in September 2020.

She is a veterinarian specialized in the Inspection of Foods of Animal Origin. She joined the IZSVe in 1995 and started to work in the field of food safety and zoonoses. Among her numerous executive roles, she occupied the position of Director of the Division of Food Safety (2011-2018) and of the Department of Risk Analysis and Surveillance in Public Health (2006-2018). She has been Director of the National Reference Center for Salmonellosis since 2001 and in charge of the WOAH Reference Laboratory for Salmonellosis since 2007. In 2018 she was appointed Director of Science of the IZSVe, a position she held until October 2020, while between April 2019 and September 2020 she covered the position of Acting Director General.

During her scientific career she has been a member of various international scientific committees and has held numerous positions as an expert for the European Commission, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) and the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). She has had an enduring scientific cooperation with EFSA, first as a member and then as Chair of the Panel on Biological Risks (BIOHAZ), and sat on the  Scientific Committee of the same agency. She has coordinated numerous national (financed by the Ministry of Health) and international projects and has authored and co-authored more than 300 scientific peer review articles published in international journals.
