The Atlantic blue crab (Callinectes sapidus) is an alien species introduced into the Mediterranean Sea, outside its natural habitat, that extends along the western Atlantic Ocean coastline. This crustacean is characterized by remarkable adaptability, fertility and aggressive behaviour.

At present it is considered one of the most invasive species along the Italian shores. Since the summer of 2023, the blue crab has started to massively invade the Delta of the Po river, crippling Manila clam production, an industry in which Italy is the European leader.
