Professional profile
Luca Bano is the Director of the SCT2 – Treviso and Belluno Territorail Unit at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
He graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Bologna in 2000. In 2005, he obtained a specialization diploma in Avian, Rabbit and Wildlife Pathology and Technology from the University of Milan, followed by a PhD in Veterinary Hygiene and Animal Pathology from the same university in 2009. In 2006, he conducted research at the Department of Poultry Science at Auburn University (Alabama, USA) and completed practical training at the State Diagnostic Laboratory of Animal Diseases in Auburn. Since 2014, he has been a de facto Diplomate of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Science (EBVS European Veterinary Specialist).
His research interests mainly focus on diseases caused by anaerobic bacteria, with a particular emphasis on animal clostridiosis, intestinal spirochaetosis, and animal botulism. He is also actively involved in numerous studies investigating antimicrobial resistance in bacterial species of veterinary interest.
He serves as Operational Unit Head for the European project ANIBOTNET and participates as a network partner in the European project EUROBIOTOX. He is a member of the official government delegation of experts participating in meetings of the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC) and has taken part in research projects related to agro-terrorism and biological defense. Furthermore, he is the scientific coordinator of several research projects focusing on the genetic characterization of pathogenic bacteria, the development of innovative diagnostic techniques, and the efficacy of vaccines against bacterial animal diseases.
