Professional profile
Giancarlo Biancotto is the Director of the SCS2 – Chemistry Unit at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
He graduated in Chemistry from the University of Padua in 1991 and specialized in Chemical Control and Analysis Methodologies at the University of Bologna. After completing a one-year research stint at McGill University in Montreal (Canada, 1994) and carrying out initial research collaborations at IZSVe through fellowships, he has served as an executive chemist within SCS2 – Chemistry since 1998. In this capacity, he led the Veterinary Drugs and Research Laboratory, overseeing official controls on veterinary drugs and their residues, as well as related R&D activities. In January 2025, he was appointed Director of SCS2 – Chemistry.
His research activities cover several fields, including: the development and validation of multi-class and multi-residue analytical methods for veterinary drugs and mycotoxins; the use of metabolomics and proteomics as screening methodologies for illicit treatments and food quality assessment; and the analysis of nanoparticles in food matrices.
To carry out research projects and develop new initiatives across various fields, he has established scientific collaborations with: Laboratory of Food Contaminants and Residue Analysis – LABERCA (Nantes, France – Prof. Bruno Le Bizec); University of Padua – Department of Comparative Biomedicine and Food Science, and Department of Biomedical Sciences (Dr. Arrigoni); Department of Immunotechnology – Lund University (Lund, Sweden – Prof. James); Rikilt-WUR, Institute of Food Safety (Wageningen, the Netherlands – Dr. S. Weigel);Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Umbria e delle Marche; Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Piemonte, Liguria e Valle d’Aosta.
