Professional profile
Laura Bortolotti is a senior veterinary officer at the SCS0 – General Support Services Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
From 2001 to 2020, she managed the IZSVe Database Management and Registry Laboratory. Since 2020, she has been supervising the sample flow between the Institute’s peripheral structures and the headquarters, ensuring proper sample storage and traceability. She is responsible for sample receiving and acceptance, and cashier services, including issuing and collecting invoices. She also coordinates sample reception, packaging, and dispatch procedures across all the IZSVe peripheral structures.
She graduated with honors (cum laude) in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Bologna in 1989 and earned a postgraduate specialization diploma with full marks in Veterinary Law and Legislation from the University of Milan in 1996. Hired in 1993 as a staff veterinarian at the Treviso peripheral structure of IZSVe, she was appointed senior veterinary officer in the Diagnostic Operational Unit in 1999. Her main duties and responsibilities included animal disease diagnostics—with a focus on rabbit diseases—and the coordination of surveillance program serology.
Her primary research interests include information system design (focused on cross-platform data exchange), data quality, and information analysis methodologies. She served as principal investigator for the IZSVe 06/18 research project titled “Development of a probabilistic model to determine the risk of domestic dog bite/aggression events” and for a research project evaluating the use of injectable transponders in sheep as an additional identification method to devices authorized in Italy. Previously, from 2007 to 2009, she led two projects on innovative cattle traceability systems aimed at improving food safety in the Veneto Region.
From 2002 to 2020, she was responsible for managing the Regional Livestock Database of the Veneto Region and the Regional Canine Registry Database. During this period, she coordinated the Veneto Veterinary Services’ controls on the identification, registration, and traceability of cattle, sheep, goats, equines, and pigs; she was also responsible for standardizing controls, training operators, managing data collection systems, and handling information exchange with the regional Paying Agency. She is an expert in animal traceability information system design and data quality analysis.
During the 2009–2010 academic years, she taught the course “Information Production and Management in Veterinary Public Health” at the Postgraduate School of Animal Health, Livestock Breeding, and Production at the University of Bologna. From 2007 to 2019, she delivered 41 invited lectures at public and private institutions on the identification and registration of cattle, pigs, sheep, equines, and pets. She organized and taught 15 seminars, comprising 119 training sessions on canine identification and traceability, as well as 12 seminars with 77 sessions on livestock identification and traceability systems.
