Professional profile
Salvatore Catania is the Director of the SCT1 – Verona Territorial Unit and Head of the WOAH Reference Laboratory for Avian Mycoplasmosis at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
He graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Messina, where he also earned his PhD in Fish and Avian Morphology. Additionally, he completed a postgraduate specialization diploma in Breeding, Hygiene, Pathology of Aquatic Species, and Control of Derived Products at the University of Padua. In 2015, he became a Diplomate of the European College of Poultry Veterinary Science (ECPVS).
From 2004 to 2005, he collaborated with the Diagnostic Laboratory of the Verona peripheral structure at IZSVe. In 2006, he served as a senior veterinary officer in the interprovincial territorial assistance area of Palermo – Messina – Caltanissetta at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Sicilia “A. Mirri”. He has been a senior veterinary officer at IZSVe since 2007. He was appointed Director of the IZSVe SCT1 – Verona peripheral structure in 2021 and has headed the WOAH Reference Laboratory for Avian Mycoplasmosis since 2022.
His research interests focus on anatomopathological and bacteriological diagnostics, with a specific emphasis on mycoplasmosis in livestock and avian pathology. His current work includes: avian mycoplasmas and biofilm; detection and simultaneous typing of avian mycoplasmas using liquid arrays; implementation of analytical methods for detecting and typing mycoplasmas in livestock; and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) testing as a tool for the rational use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine.
