Professional profile
Silvia Ravagnan is a senior biologist at the SCS7 – Health Policy Development Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
She graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of Ferrara in 2004, subsequently earning a specialization in Microbiology and Virology in 2010 and a postgraduate qualification in New Technologies in Molecular Medicine in 2013, both from the University of Padua.
From 2007, she worked at the Laboratory of Parasitology, Mycology, and Medical Entomology within IZSVe’s SCS3 unit, serving as senior biologist in charge of genetic characterisation from 2016 to 2021. Until 2021, her research activity focused on developing biomolecular methods for the diagnosis and control of vector-borne diseases and zoonoses. As part of IZSVe’s blood bank team, she was responsible for developing and applying screening methods for blood bags.
She has been involved in research projects spanning several areas: surveillance of vector-borne diseases and assessment of their risk of spread; study of innovative methodologies to evaluate vector-borne pathogens; host preference analysis of mosquito blood meals; and the spread of tick-borne pathogens in symptomatic and asymptomatic dogs. From 2010 to 2021, she actively participated in the regional surveillance of West Nile virus. She is the author and co-author of over a hundred publications in peer-reviewed journals, conference proceedings, and national and international journals.
From 2021 to 2026, she has served as senior biologist across SCS0 – General Support Services and SCS4 – Epidemiology, Services, and Research in Veterinary Public Health.
