Professional profile
Federica Gallocchio is a senior chemist at the SCS2 – Chemistry Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe), and the IZSVe contact person for the National Reference Laboratory for Nanomaterials in Food.
She graduated in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Techniques in 2003 from the University of Padua, where she went on to earn a Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2007 and a specialization in Food Science in 2012. Since joining IZSVe in 2007, she has gained extensive expertise and knowledge in analytical chemistry for detecting organic and inorganic contaminants in food products and the livestock supply chain.
Her research interests include: the development of analytical methods for detecting and characterizing inorganic nanoparticles in complex matrices using ICP-MS, single-particle ICP-MS, and hyphenated techniques such as Asymmetric Flow Field-Flow Fractionation coupled with UV-Vis/DLS/ICP-MS; and the development and validation of analytical methods for detecting organic contaminants (PFAS, PCBs, pesticides, algal biotoxins) and inorganic contaminants (heavy metals) in food of animal origin and animal feed using liquid or gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy, and ICP-MS.
She is currently involved in and collaborates on the following research projects: “Nanoparticles bioaccumulation in edible mussels: methodological assessment for the evaluation of environmental and consumers’ exposure” and “Interaction between nanoparticles and pollutants in the marine environment: methodological assessment to evaluate consumers’ exposure through marine food web”. She currently collaborates with: Wageningen Food Safety Research (WFSR / former RIKILT), Wageningen University & Research (Netherlands); the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Padua; and the Department of Chemical, Pharmaceutical and Agricultural Sciences at the University of Ferrara.
