Professional profile

Luciano Ferrari is a senior biologist at the SCT5 – Trento Territorial Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).

He graduated in Biological Sciences (Physiopathology) from the University of Bologna in 1998 and earned a postgraduate specialization diploma in Food Science (Applied Nutrition) from the University of Padua in 2005. He has been working at IZSVe since 1999, initially under collaboration and freelance contracts. During this period, he gained extensive knowledge of production processes across various sectors of the food industry.

His work focuses on food safety, risk assessment, and the application of HACCP systems in food businesses, with particular reference to the meat, fish, and apiculture supply chains, as well as small, medium, and large-scale retail distribution. He is also interested in processing technologies and their impact on food safety and shelf-life.

He provides consultancy and analytical services within company self-checking systems to improve food production quality and safety. Specifically, he coordinates the activities of the Self-Checking Support Laboratory, the drafting of company self-checking manuals, the simplification of HACCP systems in micro-enterprises, training and advisory activities for food businesses, as well as sampling plans for verifying HACCP systems and evaluating shelf-life. Furthermore, he promotes quality and safety assurance services among food producers and relevant trade associations.
