Professional profile
Antonio Barberio is a senior veterinary officer, head of the SSDT3 – Padua and Vicenza Territorial Unit and of the Bovine Pathology, Breeding and Welfare Specialist Centre at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
He graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Bologna in 1989, obtained a specialization in Veterinary Public Health from the University of Parma in 1995, and earned a PhD in Veterinary Hygiene and Animal Pathology from the University of Milan in 2016. He began his career as a research fellow at the Regional Centre for Veterinary Epidemiology of the Veneto Region, subsequently serving as an executive veterinarian at the Udine diagnostic section, the Teramo diagnostic section (IZS Abruzzo e Molise), and the Milk Centre of the IZSVe. From 2006 to 2019, he was Head of the Clinical Diagnostics Laboratory at the IZSVe’s Vicenza peripheral structure. He is a certified evaluator and trainer for the ClassyFarm system regarding dairy cattle welfare.
The Bovine Pathology, Breeding and Welfare Specialist Centre carries out research and services in the field of buiatrics. Current research conducted at the Center focuses on the risk of antimicrobial resistance emergence and the rational management of antimicrobial treatments in cattle farms. In collaboration with the University of Padua, the Center is also involved in a project assessing the use of platelet lysate in the treatment of bovine mastitis. In addition to the University of Padua, ongoing research collaborations include the University of Milan and the Quality Milk Production Services at Cornell University.
His professional activity is primarily centered on dairy cattle, and he has conducted and coordinated research on bovine and caprine mastitis, bovine and caprine Q fever, neonatal cattle diseases, herd health management, dairy cow welfare assessment, antimicrobial resistance monitoring in dairy farming, as well as bovine immunology and metabolic disorders.
He is co-author of two textbooks and over 140 scientific and technical publications.
