Professional profile
Lisa Barco is the Director of the SCS1 – General and Experimental Microbiology for Food Safety Unit at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe) and Director of the National Reference Centre for Salmonellosis.
She graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Padua in 2002 and obtained a specialization diploma in Breeding and Diseases of Aquatic Species and Hygiene of Derived Products from the same university in 2005. She earned her PhD from the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen in July 2015. From 2008 to 2013, she served as an executive veterinarian at the National Reference Centre and WOAH Reference Laboratory for Salmonellosis at IZSVe. Since August 2013, she has been an executive veterinarian at the Official Food Control Laboratory of SCS1 – General and Experimental Microbiology, which she has directed since April 2018. In June 2021, she was also appointed Director of the National Reference Centre for Salmonellosis.
Regarding the research activities of her structure, she is directly involved in projects focused on identification, quantification, and characterization methods for major foodborne pathogens. She also participates in studies aimed at developing and deepening the understanding of the epidemiology of Salmonella spp. and specific serotypes. Additionally, she has led projects assessing the efficacy of bacteria as indicators of process hygiene criteria in slaughtering.
She coordinates the activities of the Official Food Control Laboratory, liaising with competent authorities (Local Health Units/ASLs, Regional Authorities, UVAC). She oversees the evaluation, development, and validation of analytical methods for identifying and characterizing foodborne pathogens in routine activities. She also provides technical advice, collaboration, and support to local, regional, national, and international authorities.
