Professional profile
Simone Belluco is a senior veterinary officer at the SCS8 – Agri-food Chains Business Services Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
After graduating in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Padua in 2009, he obtained a specialization diploma in Inspection of Foods of Animal Origin (2012) and a PhD in Veterinary Science (2017) from the same University. From 2011 to 2016, he conducted research at IZSVe and subsequently served for two years as an executive veterinarian at ATS Brianza (Local Health Authority), where he was responsible for official controls (inspections and audits) in approved food establishments.
Throughout his career, he has conducted extensive research in the food safety sector. In particular, he has focused on the legislative and hygienic-sanitary aspects surrounding the potential introduction of insects into the human diet, the impact of foodborne transmission of Toxoplasma gondii to humans, and the applications of nanotechnology in the food sector. During these activities, he specialized in the study and application of methodologies such as risk assessment and systematic reviews in food safety. He has contributed to reports for national and international institutions and has served as a lecturer and speaker in numerous scientific training and dissemination events.
His current work involves providing consultancy and testing services for company self-checking plans (HACCP) aimed at enhancing the quality and safety of food products to protect public health. His research focuses on novel foods—with particular emphasis on edible insects and their authorization procedures—as well as innovative technologies applied to food safety to assess their impact on consumers. He is also actively engaged in risk assessment, systematic literature reviews, meta-analyses, and related scientific training and outreach activities.
