Professional profile
Alessio Bortolami is a senior veterinary officer at the SCS6 – Avian Virology Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
He earned his degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2012 from the University of Padua, where he also completed his PhD in Veterinary Sciences in 2016. Between 2015 and 2018, he was a resident at the Department of Veterinary Pathology and Public Health at the University of Liverpool. In 2019, he became a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Microbiologists, and in 2020, he completed his specialization in Animal Health, Livestock Breeding, and Livestock Production at the University of Padua.
From 2012 to 2015, he worked at the SCT3 – Animal Health Diagnostics unit of IZSVe; in 2018–2019, he worked at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise (IZSAM); and since 2019, he has been working at SCS6 – Special Virology and Experimentation at IZSVe.
His main research interests include studying the pathogenesis of emerging pathogens through in vivo and in vitro testing, developing in vitro methods to characterize viral phenotypes, evaluating the zoonotic potential and transmissibility of emerging influenza viruses using animal models, and testing the efficacy of next-generation vaccines for preventing viral diseases in poultry.
