Professional profile
Carlo Citterio is a senior veterinary officer at the SCT2 – Treviso and Belluno Territorial Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe), where he serves as Head of the Wild Animals Specialist Centre.
After earning his degree in Veterinary Medicine, he completed a PhD in Comparative Pathology of Domestic and Wild Animals and a specialization diploma in Technology and Pathology of Avian Species, Rabbits, and Game. He is also a de facto Diplomate of the European College of Zoological Medicine (specializing in Wildlife Population Health).
First as a freelance practitioner and researcher, and since 2008 as a senior veterinary officer at IZSVe, he has been involved in: the diagnosis, surveillance, and management/control of transmissible diseases in wildlife and at the domestic-wildlife interface; evaluating the impact of pathogens on wild populations; diagnosing and controlling parasitic diseases in livestock; drafting research projects as well as scientific and educational publications; delivering scientific presentations at national and international conferences; and teaching at levels ranging from public outreach to university courses.
His research interests include the epidemiology and management of priority diseases in wild animals—with a particular focus on zoonoses and high-economic-impact diseases—as well as the ecology of pathogens relevant to conservation, host-parasite interactions, and disease risk analysis in wildlife. He has also worked on process hygiene and food safety aspects within the game meat supply chain.
He has been and remains actively involved in numerous research projects, including targeted research funded by the Italian Ministry of Health, sharing his work through scientific publications and participation in national and international congresses. He has contributed to the drafting and implementation of many scientific research projects as operational unit head and principal investigator.
He is the author or co-author of over 40 scientific articles published in indexed international journals or books, over 50 technical-scientific and educational articles in national journals, and more than 100 conference abstracts. He has been a speaker at over 100 courses, conferences, and congresses in Italy and abroad, and serves as a peer reviewer for research projects and several international journals.
