Professional profile
Guido Di Martino is a senior veterinary officer and head of the SSDS2 – Animal Welfare and Biosecurity Unit at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
He graduated from the University of Padua in 2008 and earned a specialization diploma in Poultry, Rabbit, and Game Technology and Pathology from the University of Milan in 2011. He went on to obtain an MSc in Animal Welfare in 2013 and a PhD by Published Works in Animal Welfare in 2020, both from the University of Northampton. In 2021, he was nominated Independent expert (alternate member) at the European Platform for Animal Welfare (2021-2025).
As part of his official duties, he provides technical and scientific support to local and regional veterinary services by analyzing interpretive issues surrounding the implementation and updating of national and EU regulations on the protection of farm animals on-farm, during transport, and at slaughter.
He delivers training across the IZSVe’s area of remit regarding animal welfare and its associated national information systems (ClassyFarm, Vetinfo), serving as a ClassyFarm trainer and as the IZSVe liaison officer to CReNBA (the Italian National Reference Centre for Animal Welfare) for pigs and poultry. He also supports the drafting of surveillance plans for livestock diseases and the management of the ReSolVe Veneto website. His scientific research interests focus on the sustainability of livestock production, with particular reference to behavioural, physiological, and health indicators; the quantification of antimicrobial use; the quality and hygiene of facilities and housing environments; the measurement of biosecurity levels; and the definition of good farming practices, including within Smart Farming.
He is the co-author of 95 publications, including articles in peer-reviewed journals, national publications, national and international conference proceedings, and a book chapter.
