Professional profile
Nicola Ferrè is a senior systems analyst and Head of the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Emergency Response Office at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
He completed a diploma in Statistics and Computer Science for Public Administrations at the University of Padua in 1992, and went on to graduate from the same university with a degree in Political and Economic Sciences in 1996. In 2002, he earned a Master’s degree in Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing from the Università IUAV di Venezia, followed by a Master of Science (MSc) in GIS and Remote Sensing from the same institution in 2013. He has been working as a geographic information systems expert at IZSVe within SCS4 – Epidemiology, Services and Research in Veterinary Public Health since 1993.
His primary research interests focus on GIS-related disciplines and their applications in the veterinary field. Specifically, his current studies and research revolve around the development and implementation of GIS management techniques and the adaptation of ISO/TC 211 standards to the veterinary sector. Over the years, he has also conducted analyses on spatial ontology and data mining regarding data usage in veterinary surveillance and emergency situations. Additionally, his work on studying the transposition of the INSPIRE Directive (2007/2/EC) into the veterinary domain is of particular note.
He serves as principal investigator for research activities related to the projects “GIS toolbox for entomological surveillance activities” and “Definition of an operative framework for the implementation of a spatial infrastructure for veterinary surveillance data”. The first project develops spatial multi-criteria analysis techniques combined with analytic hierarchy process methods, while the second aims to implement a spatial data infrastructure for IZSVe data. He is also the coordinator of the WOAH project “Capacity development for implementing a GIS applied to surveillance, control and zoning of avian influenza and other emerging avian diseases in China”.
