Professional profile
Nicola Ferro Milone is a senior veterinary officer at the SCT2 – Treviso and Belluno Territorial Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
He graduated in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Turin in 1993 and subsequently completed a postgraduate specialization diploma in Inspection of Foods of Animal Origin at the same institution in 1998. He went on to earn a Master’s degree in Veterinary Public Health (University of Padua, 2004) and a Master’s degree in Pet Behavioural Medicine (University of Pisa, 2013).
He gained initial professional experience as a research fellow and project worker from 1994 to 2000 at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale del Piemonte, Liguria e Valle d’Aosta and at IZSVe. Since 2001, he has served as a senior veterinary officer at IZSVe, working across laboratory diagnostics, food microbiology, wildlife pathology, and vector-borne diseases.
Having always worked in peripheral structures interfacing directly with local territories, institutional clients, and private stakeholders, he has extensive expertise in veterinary public health, domestic animal and wildlife diseases, and the production and control of foods of animal origin. He has also developed specialized knowledge in animal behaviour and the human-animal bond. He has served as principal investigator for current research projects on tick-borne diseases and has delivered training for university students, food business operators, farmers, hunters, and healthcare professionals.
Based at the IZSVe peripheral structure in Belluno, his work primarily involves diagnostic activities—with a particular focus on animal pathology—and advisory services regarding control measures for foods of animal origin. He also collaborates with SCS3 – Ecosystems at IZSVe on studies concerning arthropod vectors.
