Professional profile
Isabella Monne is a senior veterinary officer and head of the SSDS1 – Technology and Innovation Platform Unit at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe), as well as head of the WOAH Reference Laboratory for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease, and the FAO Reference Centre for Animal Influenza and Newcastle Disease.
After graduating in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Padua in 2003, she completed her postgraduate specialization in Inspection of Foods of Animal Origin at the University of Padua in 2006, and earned her PhD in Veterinary Sciences from the University of Turin in 2013. Her work is primarily dedicated to managing and coordinating diagnostic activities and the molecular characterization of viral infectious diseases in animals.
Her research activities focus on developing molecular biology methods for the diagnosis, characterization, and control of viral infectious diseases, with a particular emphasis on viral zoonoses. In particular, her recent work has focused on exploring the potential of next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies in the study of infectious diseases, as well as utilizing bioinformatics tools to analyze the evolutionary and spatial dynamics of epidemics by integrating genetic and epidemiological data.
She coordinates and collaborates as a partner on numerous national and international research projects (EU – DG SANCO) covering various topics such as pathogenesis, diagnosis, molecular epidemiology, and the control of viral diseases. She participates as a lecturer and speaker in training programs, courses, and conferences organized by the IZSVe and international bodies (UN-FAO, IAEA, EU).
Internationally, she is actively involved in providing technical assistance to developing countries for the diagnosis and characterization of avian influenza viruses and paramyxoviruses. She is a member of the GISAID Technical Committee (an international platform and network for the open sharing of data on global avian influenza spread), the EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) Experts Database, and the OFFLU Wildlife Group. In 2016, she was designated as a WOAH Expert for the WOAH Reference Laboratory for Newcastle Disease and Avian Influenza at the IZSVe.
She has authored and co-authored 150 publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles, national publications, and national and international conference proceedings.
