Professional profile
Tobia Pretto is a senior veterinary officer at the SCS4 – Diseases under Surveillance and Specialist Diagnostics Unit of the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
After graduating in Veterinary Medicine (University of Padua, 2009), he completed a specialization diploma in Breeding, Hygiene, Pathology of Aquatic Species and Control of Derived Products at the same institution (2013). He earned his PhD in Veterinary Science from the University of Bologna (2018).
His past work includes the optimization of vaccination protocols for Vibrio harveyi in European seabass (Interreg Italy–Croatia AdriAquaNet project), as well as the application of innovative diagnostic techniques and the drafting of monitoring plans for crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci) (LIFE18 NAT/IT/000806).
His research interests focus on the histopathology of farmed and wild aquatic organisms (fish, molluscs, and crustaceans) and the diagnosis of fungal and parasitic diseases in decapod crustaceans (Aphanomyces astaci, microsporidiosis). He also works on the pathology and microbiology of major farmed fish species, with a particular focus on ornamental fish.
