Professional profile
Calogero Terregino is the Director of the SCS6 – Avian Virology Unit at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe), as well as the National Reference Centre and European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease.
In 1996, he obtained a degree in Veterinary Medicine from the University of Bologna, followed in 1999 by a Ph.D. in Pathology of Poultry, Rabbits, and Game. In 2003, he completed a postgraduate specialization in Technology and Pathology of Avian Species, Rabbits, and Game at the University of Milan.
He is the head of the National Reference Centre for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease and, since 2019, Director of the European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Avian Influenza and Newcastle Disease, both based at IZSVe. His work focuses on the diagnosis, surveillance, and monitoring of avian influenza and other viral diseases of poultry, domestic mammals, and wild birds.
He leads research projects on the pathogenesis of avian influenza and vaccines for major poultry diseases (avian influenza, infectious bronchitis, and Newcastle disease). He coordinates or participates as a partner in national and international research projects, such as FP7-PREDEMICS, FP7-FLUPIG, EMIDA Era-Net – NADIV, and ARIMNET 2016-2019: AVIAMED. He also manages collaborative projects with international research centers—including CODA-CERVA (Belgium), the Central Laboratory for Evaluation of Veterinary Biologics (CLEVB, Egypt), Kimron Veterinary Institute (Israel), the Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI, Germany), Glasgow University, and the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA, UK)—as well as international organizations such as the FAO and WOAH.
