A biobank is a type of biorepository that stores biological samples for their use in research.
The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe) biobank has the aim to store biological samples collected through the years by the national and international reference laboratories of the IZSVe, e.g. the OIE / FAO reference centre for Avian influenza and Newcastle disease and the FAO reference centre for rabies.
The IZSVe Biobank is also part of an italian network of public veterinary institutes that collaborate to develop and manage a veterinary biobank (http://biowarehouse.net). The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Lombardia e Emilia Romagna (IZSLER), whose role has been crucial in creating and promoting the network, was assigned the OIE collaborating centre for veterinary biological biobank.
