When we travel, one way of discovering new cultures is by tasting the typical dishes of the countries we visit. This can, however, pose potential health risks since food and beverages contaminated by bacteria, viruses or parasites can cause nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea and fever.

When this syndrome affects people travelling, it is commonly referred to in jargon as “traveller’s diarrhoea”. In most cases it affects those journeying from countries with high hygienic standards to less developed regions of the world, but it can happen anywhere. During a trip, it is important to pay attention to what you eat and drink, including in bars, restaurants and public places.
