On Friday, May 8, 2026, at 9:00 AM (CET), the webinar “The three-dimensional One Health model in the prevention of avian influenza” will be held. The event is organized by the Italian Ministry of Health (MoH) in collaboration with the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe) – European Union Reference Laboratory (EURL) for avian influenza and Newcastle disease.

Avian influenza is today one of the most complex emerging threats at the intersection of animal health, human health, and ecosystem health. Its effective prevention requires overcoming traditional compartmentalisation between veterinary surveillance, human epidemiology, and environmental monitoring, a challenge that the three-dimensional One Health operational model is specifically designed to address.

This webinar is framed within the systemic One Health model developed by the Italian Ministry of Health (Department of Human, Animal and Ecosystem Health), based on three interdependent dimensions: the cultural and educational dimension; the equity dimension; and the proactive prevention dimension. These three axes, applied to the specific context of avian influenza, provide an operational and scalable framework for effective, equitable, and sustainable prevention policies.

The webinar will explore how the One Health model can address these three axes through systemic and multidimensional responses.

Topics

Presentations will be delivered by experts from the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), and IZSVe.

Specifically, they will outline:

  • the methodological work for drafting the Global Curriculum (GC) for One Health experts and international training initiatives as a lever for capacity building;
  • the role of proactive prevention and integrated surveillance in the early response to avian influenza;
  • the role of the Quadripartite and One Health Task Force and intersectoral governance in coordinating prevention policies.

An interactive session is scheduled to discuss and identify, together with remote participants, recommendations for implementing the One Health approach in the integrated surveillance of avian influenza.
