The European Virus Archive (EVA), born within the EVAg project – Horizon 2020 research program, was registered on March 27, 2025 in Belgium as AISBL (Association Internationale Sans But Lucratif). EVA-AISBL thus becomes a structural asset of European and international virological research, thanks to the collaboration of numerous health and research organizations from 11 different countries, including the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe).
EVA-AISBL is today the only research infrastructure worldwide dedicated to the collection, characterization, production and distribution of reference viral resources to support virology research. EVA brings together unique collections and provides researchers from the academic, private, and public health sectors with ethical and equitable access to high-quality viral resources—such as strains, diagnostic tools, and reference materials—in full compliance with international regulations
EVA-AISBL is built on the collective strength of public health agencies, academic institutions, veterinary institutes and research centers from 11 countries, sharing a wide range of skills and specialized resources in the field of human, veterinary and environmental virology. EVA is in fact inspired by the “One Virology” concept, which apply the One Health approach to the study and health management of viruses.
Through its activities EVA-AISBL will therefore support basic research and innovation in the development of vaccines, antiviral drugs and diagnostic systems, playing a fundamental role in improving the response capabilities to viral epidemics at the European and global level.
The Italian public health bodies participating in EVA-AISBL are the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale della Lombardia ed Emilia-Romagna (IZSLER) and the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale delle Venezie (IZSVe), which make their collections of viruses of veterinary and food interest available to the association, supporting health surveillance and scientific research on animal virosis and viral zoonoses.
